Dozens detained as new Ergenekon wave reaches murders of missionaries

Dozens including members of the military were detained yesterday in a major operation carried out as part of the Ergenekon probe into suspected links with the 2007 Zirve Publishing House murders, in which three people who sold Christian literature were killed.
 
Simultaneous operations were carried out in nine provinces yesterday at the order of Zekeriya Öz, the chief prosecutor overseeing the investigation into Ergenekon, a clandestine criminal network charged with plotting to topple the government by creating large-scale chaos in the country. Twenty locations were searched yesterday in nine provinces, including Malatya, Siirt, Muğla, Mersin and İzmir. Among the premises searched were provincial gendarmerie commands in some provinces. Reports said 20 individuals were detained yesterday, including retired Col. Mehmet Ülger, who was serving as Malatya Provincial Gendarmerie Brigade commander in 2007; Ruhi Abat, an instructor in İnönü University's theology ''ΖΑΜΑΝ''
