Celebrate International Day of Forests with ARKive

Forests cover about one third of the world’s land surface, yet incredibly house around 80 percent of the world’s terrestrial biodiversity. As well as providing a home for a wide range of species, forests are also extremely important to human wellbeing, playing a significant role in fighting climate change, creating jobs and providing raw materials.

The 21st March 2014 is the second International Day of Forests, a day set up by the UN to celebrate and raise awareness of the importance of forests and trees. On this day, countries are encouraged to undertake efforts to organise activities involving forests and trees.

Celebrate the International Day of Forests by discovering more about these fascinating and biodiverse ecosystems and the threats they face with our new Forests and European forests pages.
