Bioluminescence is light that is produced when a chemical reaction
occurs within a living organism. Unlike other sources of light,
bioluminescence is considered to be a ‘cold’ reaction as it does not
give off any heat. Bioluminescence has mystified humankind throughout
history and initial reports of sightings were discarded as myths. Modern
day scientists continue to be eluded by the function and mechanisms of
the process. A high percentage of bioluminescent species are found in
the oceans, although a small amount are found in terrestrial ecosystems.
It is thought that ocean-living organisms evolved the ability to
produce light around 150 million years ago.
